काग़ज़ के टुकड़े तो नहीं थे, मगर बिखर गए हम।
कैसे बताऊँ, किसे बताऊँ अब इस दर्द में,
आँखों से आँसू नहीं हो रहे जुदा।
निकले घर को छोड़कर, बोल गए बस अलविदा—
अलविदा, अलविदा, अलविदा।
बोलती थी तू, माँ—
“बेटा, घर जल्दी आया करो तुम,
आँख नहीं लगती, बस किसी उलझन में न रहा करो तुम।
माँ, जल्दी सो जाया करो तुम,
फ़िक्र न मेरी करा करो तुम।
साथ तेरी दुआ का असर है,
बस कोई ग़म न सहा करो तुम।”

O God, Tell Me Why
O God, tell me, why did You do this?
You broke my existence,
you destroyed my little world,
and took my mother away from me.
My tears have still not left my eyes,
and every moment, I have remembered You.
O God, tell me, why did You do this?
You shattered my world,
you destroyed my home.
We were not pieces of paper,
yet somehow, we were torn apart.
How do I explain this pain,
and to whom can I tell it?
The tears in my eyes
refuse to leave.
She left home and simply said goodbye—
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.
She used to say,
“Son, come home early.
I cannot sleep;
please don't let yourself get caught in any trouble.
Son, go to sleep early,
don't make me worry about you.
Your prayers are always with me,
so don't carry any sorrow.”
Whom do I tell these words to now?
My God, give me an answer—
