आज वो हमें जंग के कुछ आदाब सिखाते हैं,
मगर हम मोहब्बत में नज़रअंदाज़ कर जाते हैं।
हमारी ख़ामोशी को हमारी हार न माना जाए,
हम जंग में कभी नहीं, मोहब्बत में हार जाते हैं।
तुम सिर्फ़ जंग और जंग पर सदा आमादा रहते हो,
हम तो महज़ मोहब्बत पर सदा मिट जाते हैं।
जंग के आदाब हमें पता हैं, सब कुछ जायज़ है,
लेकिन हम मोहब्बत में अपना हुनर आज़माते हैं।
ये खेल-तमाशा बिल्कुल नहीं है, मैदान-ए-जंग है,
तुम नेज़े से वार करते हो, हम लफ़्ज़ों से करते हैं।
तुम्हारी आदत है ज़ख़्म पे नमक से वार करने की,
हम लहू-लिफ़्फ़ाज़ी से दिल के ज़ख़्म मिटा देते हैं।

The Rules of War
Today they teach us the rules of war,
But in love, we choose to overlook them.
Let our silence never be mistaken for defeat,
We never lose in war; we lose in love.
You remain forever ready for war and conflict,
While we are willing to sacrifice ourselves for love.
We know the rules of war; everything is permissible,
But in love, we choose to test our own skills.
This is no game or spectacle; this is a battlefield,
You strike with spears, while we strike with words.
You have a habit of striking wounds with salt,
While we heal the wounds of the heart with words.
